The exchange was brief, less than a minute, and marked the first time that the younger Kim met with any South Koreans since his father died. While the South Korean government has banned all public expressions of sorrow over Kim’s death, Seoul officials allowed the women to make a private visit because North Korea had sent separate condolence delegations to Seoul after the deaths of Chung Mong-hun, Hyun's late husband and former Hyundai Group chairman in 2003 and Kim Dae-jung in 2009. A look back at Microsoft's busy year, A to Z

The year 2011 has been eventful for Microsoft, from its partnership with Nokia to the purchase of Skype and the first peek at Windows 8. Here's Microsoft's year, from A to Z.
A= Azure. On Feb. 1, Microsoft marked the one-year anniversary of its Windows Azure cloud platform, on which developers and companies build software and distribute their products and services. New customers included Toyota and T-Mobile USA. Boeing released a virtual model of the Boeing 737 running on Azure.
B= Bing. How many times a day do you hear "just Google it"? Does anyone say "just Bing it?" Perhaps, slowly, it's catching on. In November, Microsoft sites — primarily Bing — had roughly 15 percent of the U.S. search-engine market, pulling just about even with Yahoo (which is powered by Bing), according to comScore. Google still had 65 percent though.
C= Cloud. Microsoft honchos repeatedly say the company is "all in" to the cloud. So what did that entail in 2011? In addition to marking Azure's anniversary, this year Microsoft launched Windows Intune, Office 365, Dynamics CRM Online 2011, and Dynamics AX 2012 — all cloud products. It also introduced iPhone and Windows phone mobile apps for SkyDrive, its personal cloud service. But Microsoft doesn't break out financial numbers for many of the cloud offerings, so it's hard to tell how they're doing financially.
D= "Developers! Developers! Developers!" CEO Steve Ballmer's famous/infamous rallying cry made several appearances at Microsoft events this year. At the Mix conference in April, Corporate Vice President Joe Belfiore showed off a Windows Phone 7 ringtone featuring Ballmer chanting: "Developers! Developers! Developers!" At the Build conference in September, Ballmer told developers "Let's seize the opportunity for developers, developers, developers!"
E= Einhorn, David. The high-profile hedge fund investor said Ballmer needed to be replaced and that the CEO was the reason Microsoft's stock was performing poorly. Einhorn's fund nevertheless increased its shares in Microsoft.
F= Facebook. Since Microsoft and Facebook announced a partnership to build social search in Bing, Microsoft has added more Facebook features to Bing, including adding Facebook "likes" on specific pages inside popular websites. In 2011, Skype also enabled video chats with friends from within Facebook and Facebook-to-Facebook calls from within Skype.
G= Google. The competition amped up this year on various fronts, including search, mobile, patents, office productivity and the cloud. Perhaps most entertainingly, a widening patent spat over Google's Android mobile operating system led to an exchange between the two in which Google characterized Microsoft's patent-licensing program as extortion and a Microsoft spokesman tweeted he had one word for Google: "Waaaah."
H= Hadoop. In October, Microsoft brought a version of this open-source, large-scale data-processing system to Windows Server and Azure, integrating it with SQL Server.
I= Internet Explorer. Microsoft likes to say Internet Explorer 9 is the most used browser worldwide on Windows 7. And if you add together all versions of IE, it's still the world's most used browser. But IE's share has been steadily declining: to 41 percent, down from 48 percent a year ago, according to StatCounter, one Web analytics tracking firm. What's been rising? Google Chrome.
J= Julie Larson-Green. Microsoft's corporate vice president of program management for Windows was named one of Glamour magazine's list of women in tech who could become the next great tech legend. She gave a key demo of Windows 8 at the Build conference.
K= Kinect. Microsoft marked Kinect's one-year anniversary in the fall by touting what it dubbed the "Kinect Effect" — people using the voice- and motion-sensor for more than Xbox games. In 2011, Microsoft gave academics a software-development kit for Kinect applications, and plans to do so for businesses next year.
L= Lync. Microsoft's office-communications software marked its first anniversary in December, claiming nearly 3 million enterprise users rely on it rather than traditional PBX for telephone-related needs.
M= Mango. Windows Phone 7.5, code-named "Mango," is the latest update of the Windows Phone operating system. While it was critically well-received after it started rolling out in September, Windows Phone still wasn't able to gain much traction by the end of the year. Will 2012 be different?
N= Nokia. In February, the Finnish phone maker and Microsoft announced they were teaming up, with Nokia using primarily Windows Phone as its smartphone platform. Nokia launched its first Windows Phones — the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 — in October. Next year is huge for the partnership — and their future in the smartphone market.
O= Office. More than 100 million copies of Office 2010 have been sold since its launch in May 2010. It helped Microsoft's Business division reach $5.62 billion in sales in the most recent quarter.
P= Patents. Patents have become a financial and competitive strategy among tech companies, with Microsoft right in the thick of things. Mostly, the company contends that features in Google's Android infringe on Microsoft patents. It has sought patent-licensing agreements with phone makers who use Android, or taken them to court. By the end of 2011, it had reached licensing agreements with 10 manufacturers that together represent more than 50 percent of Android devices. It was in litigation with Barnes & Noble and Inventec. In its litigation with a third company — Motorola — the International Trade Commission found in December that Motorola infringed on one of Microsoft's patents, but not on six others.
Q= Quarterly earnings. Even if Microsoft's stock price is flat, its quarterly earnings have performed solidly, thanks in large part to Windows, Office, and the Server and Tools business. For fiscal 2011, the company reached $69.9 billion in sales, with $23.2 billion in profit.
R= Re-imagining. That's what Microsoft says it's doing with Windows 8 (see W). And it really wants to tell you about it. "Windows 8 is a re-imagining of Windows, from the chip to the interface," Julie Larson-Green wrote in June after the first demonstration of the new operating system at the D9 conference. "Windows 8 is a bold re-imagining of what Windows could be," Windows President Steven Sinofsky said at Build. "If Windows 8 is Windows re-imagined ... we're also in the process of re-imagining Microsoft," Ballmer declared, also at Build. Imagine that.
S= Skype. Microsoft bought the Internet phone company for $8.5 billion, its largest purchase ever. Skype is now a business division within Microsoft, which presumably will integrate with its own offerings, including Lync, Outlook and Xbox. Will Skype's 170 million monthly users continue to be able to use its Internet voice and video-calling features for free? And will Microsoft do right by Skype? We'll see in 2012.
T= Tulalip. The internal code name for what turned out to be So.cl, Microsoft's experimental social network and search site for students, unveiled in December. The Tulalip Tribes were unhappy about it, saying the name infringed on the tribes' name. Microsoft apologized and dropped the code name.
U= University Village Microsoft Store. In October, the company launched its U-Village retail store — its 12th nationwide and second in the Seattle area. By the end of the year, the company had 14 Microsoft Stores, with plans to get to 75 in the next three years.
V= VMware. The Redmond software giant's competitor was the subject of a Microsoft spoof video characterizing VMware's emphasis on virtualization as stuck in the past.
W= Windows 8. The re-imagined operating system (see R) is expected to launch in a beta test in February. Windows 8 is the first Windows version designed from the beginning to work on both tablets and PCs. A lot is riding on it, including proof that Microsoft can still dominate computing in a world where competitors have zoomed ahead on mobile devices.
X= Xbox. The hugely successful Xbox 360 (58 million consoles sold so far) got a dashboard update in December, with expanded Kinect voice and gesture controls and the goal of bringing content from dozens of video providers to Xbox. UGG Classic Cardy Boots It was another step toward Microsoft's vision of the Xbox as the living-room family-entertainment center.
Y= Y chromosome: What most employees of Microsoft have. Men made up 76 percent of Microsoft's global workforce last fiscal year, according to its 2011 Citizenship Report.
Z= Zune. RIP, Zune Player. There were a few days in October when we didn't know your fate: First, Microsoft seemed to say you were dead, then not dead, then, finally, definitely dead. Your spirit lives on in the Zune music and video service in PCs, Xbox, Windows Phone and existing Zune players.

EU Downgrades, EBA Stress Tests, Dutch Antitrust: Compliance

Standard & Poor’s, rebuked by Warren Buffett in August after downgrading the U.S. over government gridlock, is again injecting itself into the political process, just as European leaders are poised to meet for a summit aimed at ending the region’s sovereign-debt crisis. The ratings firm put Germany, France and 13 other euro-area nations on review for a downgrade, saying “continuing disagreements among European policy makers on how to tackle” the region’s debt crisis risk damaging their financial stability. The move came four months after S&P cut the U.S. to AA+, saying “extremely difficult” political discussions over how to reduce America’s more than $1 trillion budget deficit tainted the credit quality of the world’s largest economy. Bondholders questioned the timing of S&P’s move, which occurred Dec. 5, with European Union leaders planning to meet Dec. 8-9 in Brussels to end a crisis that led to bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal, and now threatens to engulf Italy. More than $8.1 trillion of government debt would be affected if S&P does downgrade all the nations, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Germany and France are rated AAA. Moritz Kraemer, S&P’s head of European sovereign ratings, said yesterday in a conference call with reporters that the Euro-zone crisis has reached a level of “systemic stresses,” and has become “a crisis of euro zone governance.” Kraemer denied that the company was trying to influence politics.

National doctors group backs FDA crackdown

A national organization of doctors has come out in support of the FDA crackdown on advertising for gastric banding surgery.
Last week, the Food and Drug Administration accused the 1-800-GET-THIN marketing company of using misleading advertising for its Lap-Band weight-loss surgery. As the Los Angeles Times reported, billboards alongside Southern California freeways show smiling thin people and grabby phrases -- while warnings of risks are so small as not to be legible, the FDA said. A recent radio ad, with its catchy jingle, included the endorsement of celebrity doctor Drew Pinsky.

"Physicians and surgeons who treat obese patients have an obligation to educate their patients about risks and benefits of all available treatments for obesity ....
"The ASBP believes that without such education patients cannot make an informed decision about which option(s) are in their best interest."
Gastric banding has become a seemingly more attractive weight-loss option in recent years.
Last year, The Times noted a study that showed the surgery as significantly more effect than lifestyle changes in helping extremely obese teens lose significant weight and maintain that weight loss. UGG Ultra Short

But, as Times columnist Michael Hiltzik wrote in January of this year on the Lap-Band version of gastric banding: Many consumers "don't have a clue when it comes to assessing the dangers of what is, after all, major surgery."

Taliban must have clear representative for peace talks, Karzai says

Afghanistan's government can't hold peace talks with its Taliban insurgents until the Islamic militia identifies a representative with the authority to negotiate, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said in an interview that aired Sunday.Karzai told CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" in an exclusive interview that Afghanistan also needs the help of neighboring Pakistan for any talks to succeed.Karzai said the September assassination of former President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who had attempted to meet with Taliban representatives, showed that "we were actually talking to nobody." UGG Roxy Tall 5818"A man who came in the name of a messenger for peace turned out to be a suicide bomber," Karzai said. "Therefore, we have now clearly said that we will welcome a Taliban address, but that address must have the clarity that this representative is authorized and is representing the Taliban movement as we see it."Meanwhile, Pakistan's involvement is important "because we all know that the Taliban have their places there," Karzai said. "They operate from there. And a meaningful peace process cannot go well or end in satisfactory results without Pakistan's participation and help."NATO forces led by the United States have been battling the Taliban and their al Qaeda allies in Afghanistan for a decade, since al Qaeda's 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Where the spirit survives

Lumepa Apelu is almost apologetic, pointing to a menu of just a dozen items framed with flowers on the wall of her family's shiny new beach restaurant. On a quiet Monday in January we're the first customers of the day, pulling in for lunch at Lalomanu on the south-east tip of Upolu, Samoa's main island.Almost four months earlier, Lalomanu - with its ridiculously picturesque coastline framed with coconut trees and dotted with beach fales standing just metres from the baby-blue waters - took the brunt of a series of deadly waves. UGG Ultra Short The September 29 tsunami claimed about 200 lives and wiped out the restaurant that previously stood on this spot servicing guests at the family's Taufua Beach Fales - semi-enclosed huts with such a pretty outlook that Samoan families often came here, too, to holiday alongside tourists.Taufua's 18 fales - along with all the neighbouring ones - are gone. The only clue they ever existed is a battered sign propped against the new restaurant and bar, which opened for business just three days earlier.Former guests, expats and friends came from all over to celebrate the opening, as symbolic as the first eucalyptus leaves sprouting after an Australian bushfire. They ate themselves silly, then camped overnight on the restaurant's floor. It was, by all accounts, quite a party. But as we wait for our plates of crisp battered tuna, chips and salad to arrive, my companion tells me the tsunami also killed one of Lumepa's two young daughters. As we pay the bill, I can't ask Lumepa directly about her loss; her sadness is as visible as a black mourning dress. UGG Classic Mini 5854Instead, I ask if it was a difficult decision to rebuild the shattered business."You have to rebuild in memory of your loved ones," she says. Now the restaurant's up and running, he plans to get cracking on the first fale tomorrow. The psychologist Dr Pamela Connolly, married to comedian Billy Connolly, is well known in these parts - her company, Frangipani Productions, has made stars of several Samoans and she once retraced the South Sea travels of Fanny Stevenson, the wife of Samoa's most famous resident, Robert Louis Stevenson. Late last year, she spoke on Sydney radio about the incredible resilience of the Samoans. Now I'm beginning to understand what she means. Uncle says that those lost "are still alive to us". "We loved the people who lost their lives here," he says. "They were lost here and they are still here."It's a sentiment that's been given a dark twist of late. In a nation full of myths and legends - a far-fetched story accompanies pretty much every Samoan landmark - some are gossiping about ghosts haunting the tsunami-wrecked area. My companion from Apia, who spent the night of the tsunami making soup and hot dogs and collecting bottled water to sustain emergency workers the next day, shakes his head in disgust at the rumours. Lumepa's family and others who are rebuilding are desperate for visitors to return; that kind of talk isn't helpful. As we leave, we notice the family is following a post-tsunami suggestion to use traditional thatch roofing instead of corrugated iron. UGG Boots Outlet The suggestion - made at a meeting in November when those in the tourism industry looked at ways they could move forward - came from the owner of the Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa, Joe Annandale, who lost his wife, Tui, in the disaster.Heading for the Cross Island Road that will return us to Apia, we press on westwards along the south coast. To be frank, it's still a wreck. There's little heavy machinery; much of the cleaning up is done by hand. Everywhere are concrete slabs that were once part of somebody's home or an open-walled meeting house. Others that withstood the seawater are crowned with twisted iron, while random structures stand miraculously untouched. A sign announces Habitat for Humanity volunteers are busy building a house. At Saleapaga there's a motley collection of fales sandwiched between sea and road. The owner of the Faofao Beach Fales, Koroseta Legalo, rebuilt her fales, restaurant and bar a mere six weeks after the tsunami, figuring it was a waste of time waiting for a cheque to arrive. You can't help but admire her determination. If I didn't already have a bellyful of lunch, I would have pulled in here for another meal to support the family's efforts.Lots of visitors will come to Samoa and submerge themselves in the other parallel universe here, the one where you slide down mossy waterfalls as though you're 14 again, snorkel among technicolour fish, take the ferry over to the even more beautiful "big island" of Savai'i, work on your tan, swim with turtles, lounge in the hotel pool and slurp cocktails.I did all of that and could have returned home sated by those adventures. Going to the south coast wasn't without some fear - the main one being that I'd feel like a voyeur of the worst kind or that people might stare me down or shout at me as a nosy intruder. UGG Argyle Knit Boots It turned out to be the best thing I did in Samoa. It was an emotional lesson in optimism, in how people can survive the worst and pick themselves back up.At Satitoa, on the east coast, as I watch young guys shovelling beach sand into a truck, Sinapi Lemalu tells me he's turning this sand into bricks for his new house to save on the cost of building materials. We sit on what remains of his former home and he talks openly and easily about what happened, who he lost and how he's rebuilding further inland. He is, he says, grateful for the help from New Zealand and Australia. And then - heartbreakingly - he smiles for my camera, as though it were just another day in paradise.

AP IMPACT: At Penn State, those in the know explained away Sandusky, or looked away

The warning signs were there for more than a decade, disturbing indicators that Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was breaching boundaries with young boys — or maybe worse.Yet the university’s top administrators kept allowing, even encouraging, Sandusky to invite some of those boys into campus sports buildings — locker rooms, showers, a sauna and a swimming pool — where prosecutors now say he fondled, molested and sexually assaulted some of the most vulnerable in the place known as Happy Valley.Too many, from the university president to department heads to janitors, knew of troubling behavior by this revered, longtime coach who founded a charity for children with hardscrabble backgrounds. But at this school whose sports programs vow “success with honor,” the circle of knowledge was kept very limited and very private.Year after year, Penn State missed opportunity after opportunity to stop Sandusky. Secrecy ruled, and reaction to complaints of improper sexual behavior was to remain silent, minimize or explain away — all part of a deep-rooted reflex to protect the sacred football program. The fact that so few say they knew is all anyone needs to know about the insular culture that surrounds Penn State — a remote and isolated community in a central Pennsylvania valley, a university cloaked in so much secrecy, in large part, because it is exempt from the state’s open records law, and a football program that has prided itself on handling its indiscretions internally and quietly, without outside interference. UGG Bailey Button Boots Prosecutors say the only thing that stopped Sandusky, who retired a year after a 1998 allegation was not prosecuted, was when he was accused elsewhere, a decade later, of sexually abusing a freshman at a local high school where Sandusky had volunteered to help coach the football team.Today, Sandusky is charged with more than 50 counts related to sexual abuse over a 12-year period. According to the criminal charges, when he wasn’t acting out his compulsions on the venerated main campus of Pennsylvania State University, he was doing so mostly in a basement bedroom of his home. And while the official allegations, so far, target only three people — Sandusky, along with the school’s athletic director and a since-retired senior vice president, who are both charged with perjury and failure to report a 2002 sexual abuse complaint — an investigation by The Associated Press suggests that blame also rests on Penn State as an institution and the entrenched traditions of now-fired head football coach Joe Paterno. In addition, the AP investigation, which included scores of interviews and a review of the limited number of available documents, also reveals new details in the Sandusky case: the special handling of a 1998 sexual abuse complaint by child welfare workers; a clash between investigators over what the evidence showed at that time; extraordinary retirement perks that gave Sandusky access to places on campus where he is accused of abusing children; a determination by a nearby county child-welfare agency that Sandusky sexually abused a boy in 2008 in a case that sparked the state criminal case; and a passionate defense of Paterno’s role by his wife and her vigorous assertion that his university superiors are responsible for any mistakes in the handling of the 2002 abuse complaint.

A butler with your bure

IT HAS been two decades since I first visited Fiji but I've never forgotten the traditional greeting of "Bulaaaah", delivered with such gusto it almost blew my hat off. It means hello, welcome, good to see you. Occasionally it means something else."Be careful, you're walking on sacred ground," my guide, Kini Sarai, says as I puff my way up a massive sand dune. "And that's no bula-shit."It's day one of a four-day long weekend at the Outrigger on the Lagoon on Fiji's Coral Coast and I've traded a poolside deckchair for a 650-hectare pile of sand. A fifteen-minute drive from the resort, Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park is the location of one of Fiji's earliest recorded prehistoric sites. About 3000 years ago the Lapita people settled here. Considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Pacific, the dunes are still giving up their secrets. In some sections we step carefully to avoid walking on shards of pottery. Other sections, currently under excavation, contain human remains. But the dunes are sacred for another reason - it's where Fiji's famous rugby players train. "The dunes are their secret weapon," says Kini, a national representative player from 1988-91.Today, he is the activities manager at the Outrigger, co-ordinating scuba diving, kayaking, snorkelling, beach volleyball, golf driving and tennis. The Outrigger maintains a strong connection with rugby, being the official sponsor of the No.1 provincial rugby team in Fiji, the Nadroga Stallions. UGG Classic Short Boots During the season guests are invited to attend a game at Lawaqa Park, a 10-minute shuttle ride away, where up to 10,000 fans turn up each week to watch. The Outrigger is a five-star hotel with 207 rooms and suites and 47 bures, set amid 16 hectares of manicured gardens on the shores of a reef-fringed lagoon. On arrival, I squeak out my first "Bula" in 20 years, skol the welcome drink and dip my head for the obligatory flower lei before being introduced to my talai, Tova.Guests staying in a deluxe ocean view room, bure or suite have the services of a personal talai. Trained by the Australian Butler School, they welcome guests to their rooms, iron clothes or organise restaurant reservations and tours. Most importantly, they deliver champagne and canapes every day at sunset. My room has everything you'd expect from an island resort - coconutty decor, coconutty bath products and coconutty wall hangings - plus the usual five-star accoutrements such as a king-size bed, slippers and gowns, satellite television with plasma screen and high-speed broadband. That evening we dine at Outrigger's Ivi Restaurant. Under the direction of executive chef Shailesh Naidu, Ivi is the most-awarded restaurant in Fiji. I choose island fish marinated in lime juice and served with coconut cream and chilli; lobster in a red Thai curry; and, for dessert, crepes, freshly prepared at our table.Next morning, Tova suggests the Bebe Spa for a treatment - for remedial reasons, of course. The Bebe is on the crest of Vakalomalagi Hill, the highest point of the resort, with commanding views of the ocean. It features seven open-air treatment rooms, the Bure ni Loloma wedding chapel and a relaxation lounge. After a delightful sugar scrub, a Fijian Bobo massage and a caviar mask I discover the best item on the spa menu - the upstairs Kalokalo Bar, which serves high tea during the day, champagne and oysters at sunset and tapas any time in between.Although the Outrigger has a well-deserved reputation as family-friendly resort, there's also a commitment to adult space and time; Ivi and the Bebe are child-free zones. The Outrigger has two kids' clubs but it also has another ace up its sleeve - the Meimei Nanny Service.Tova suggests that if I'd like to learn more about Fijian culture I should take a Sigatoka River Safari up into the central hills to visit one of the remote villages. At the boat ramp I am introduced to my two drivers - Captain Black Jack and Captain Hi-jack. "They're our real names," says the first of the pair. "And that's no bula-shit."

Where couscous meets paella

I LIKE the sight of security personnel at international transport hubs. It helps me feel that little bit safer, knowing the authorities are alert and watching for anything suspicious, protecting all the good folks like me.So I'm comfortable having the burly policeman near me as I collect my X-rayed belongings from the scanner bench at the ferry terminal. That is, until he says: “Come with me. Give me your passport.”I'm heading from Morocco to continental Europe, taking the unusual option of the overnight ferry to Malaga from Melilla, a 12-square-kilometre Spanish enclave within Morocco, on north Africa's Mediterranean coast. There'd been no problems walking through the dusty makeshift border crossing from Morocco to Melilla. I'm now officially in Spain.Melilla is a fascinating coexistence of North African and European features. Occupied by Spain since 1496, a leftover from centuries of tussles between Spaniards and Moors, it is home to roughly equal numbers of ethnic Spaniards and Moroccan Berbers and Arabs. The guidebook says Melilla's modernist architecture is second only to that of Barcelona and I believe it. I'd spent an enjoyable warm evening admiring the stately, ornate buildings and exploring flower-festooned streets and parks and the 16th-century fortress adjacent to the ferry terminal.I chose a cafe down a quiet street to have dinner and a table full of friendly local women saw that I couldn't read the menu, so had a great time selecting various local dishes for me. UGG Argyle Knit Boots The waiter and cook joined in and I feasted. Maybe it is my satisfied expression that makes Mr Burly Policeman suspicious. He leads me into a windowless room with just a chair, bench and X-ray machine. He gestures to the bench and I place my backpack there. He is clearly a man of few words. “Give me your shoes.” I give him my left shoe and am undoing the right when he says: “One will do.” After bending, twisting, smelling and groping the shoe, he then gives it back and leaves the room.I become aware that I am shaking slightly, my breathing has quickened and I feel oddly weak. Why, I wonder, do we respond as though we're guilty when we're doing nothing wrong? I realise, with helpless despair, that the ferry departs in 15 minutes. Time passes.Suddenly Mr Burly Policeman reappears. He gives me my passport. “You may go,” he says. Without thinking, I say “thank you” and hurry to the ferry without appearing as though I'm a criminal making a getaway. I make it by one minute and as I catch my breath, I can't help feeling ticked off. But an enclave on another continent probably has plenty of dubious types transiting, apparently doing dodgy things with shoes. Today, they decided I could be one of them. Nothing for it, really, but to cop it sweet and remember Melilla as a brief, delightful Spanish/African experience with just a little bit of sour at the end.

Control diabetes to cut cancer risk

Diabetes is associated with lower risk of prostate cancer in men but with higher risk of other cancers in both men and women, according to a new study. The NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study data also showed an association between diabetes and higher cancer mortality rates."Our results provide further evidence that abnormal insulin and glucose signaling may contribute to cancer initiation and development," said Gabriel Lai, a cancer prevention fellow at the US National Cancer Institute. Ugg Bailey Button 5803 "There are myriad benefits from avoiding diabetes through exercise, diet and maintaining a healthy body weight. Our study confirms additional benefits in the form of reduced morbidity and mortality from certain cancers."Lai and colleagues conducted a prospective study using data from more than 500,000 predominantly white, non-Hispanic men and women aged 50 to 71 years. From 1995 to 1996, the participants completed questionnaires about diet, lifestyle and whether or not they had diabetes. Researchers followed the patients for 11 years. Results showed that diabetes was associated with an 8 per cent increased risk for cancer among women and a 4 per cent decreased risk for men. In previous research, a decreased risk for prostate cancer was associated with diabetes, which researchers believe might be due to the lower testosterone levels associated with diabetes. UGG Ultra Short BootsAfter excluding prostate cancer from their evaluation, Lai and colleagues found that diabetes was associated with a 9 per cent increased risk for cancer in men.As for mortality, diabetes was associated with an 11 per cent increased risk in women and a 17 per cent increased risk in men."These risks appeared independent from other cancer risk factors, such as obesity and cigarette smoking," Lai said. After evaluating by cancer site, the researchers found diabetes was associated with a significant increase in risk for colon, rectal and liver cancers among men and women. In men, diabetes was associated with an increased risk for pancreatic and bladder cancers; in women, it was associated with an increased risk for stomach, anal and endometrial cancers. No association was found between diabetes and lung, skin or other cancers.

Sleeping troubles? Try drinking cherry juice

Researchers from the School of Life Sciences at Northumbria University have found that drinking cherry juice can help us sleep an extra 25 minutes a night.Their research also found that people who regularly consume cherry juice have improved quality of sleep, the Telegraph reported.Montmorency cherry juice significantly increases the levels of melatonin in the body, the hormone that regulates sleep, according to researchers.Their findings could benefit those who have difficulty sleeping due to insomnia, shift work or jet lag.In the study, led by Dr Glyn Howatson, 20 healthy volunteers drank a 30ml serving of either tart cherry juice or a placebo juice twice a day for seven days. UGG Classic Tall Boots Urine samples were collected from all participants before and during the investigation to determine levels of melatonin, a naturally occurring compound that heavily influences the human sleep-wake cycle. The researchers led by Dr Glyn Howatson found that when participants drank cherry juice for a week there was a significant increase in their urinary melatonin than the control condition and placebo drink samples. The actigraphy measurements of participants who consumed the cherry juice saw an increase of around 15 minutes to the time spent in bed, 25 minutes in their total sleep time and a 5-6 per cent increase in their sleep efficiency.Cherry juice drinkers reported less daytime napping time compared to their normal sleeping habits before the study and the napping times of the placebo group. The findings will be published this week in the online edition of the European Journal of Nutrition.

Jogging boosts brain power

Jogging a couple of days a week can significantly improve memory, say researchers. The study led by Cambridge University showed that running triggered the growth of hundreds of thousands of new brain cells in a region that is linked to the formation and recollection of memories."We know exercise can be good for healthy brain function, but this work provides us with a mechanism for the effect," a newspaper quoted Timothy Bussey, a behavioural neuroscientist at Cambridge and the study`s senior author as saying. UGG Boots OutletDuring the study, researchers followed two groups of mice, one of which had unlimited access to a running wheel throughout, whey they clocked up an average of 15 miles (24km) a day, while the other mice formed a control group. The mice were placed in front of a computer screen, which displayed two identical squares side by side.According to the study, if they nudged the one on the left with their nose they received a sugar pellet reward. If they nudged the one on the right, they got nothing. They were then subjected to a memory test where the more they nudged the correct square, the better they scored. The findings revealed that the running mice scored nearly twice as high as the control group during the memory test. However, the greatest improvement occurred in the later stages of the experiment, when the two squares were so close they nearly touched."At this stage of the experiment, the two memories the mice are forming of the squares are very similar," Bussey said."It is when they have to distinguish between the two that these new brain cells really make a difference," he added.

PLAZA DE LOS COCHES, CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

Cartagena oozes romance. Its walled old town is a pastel-hued warren of colonial mansions, blooming balconies and elegant towers – which is why it was used as a film set, for the 2008 adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's novel Love in the Time of Cholera. It's the perfect backdrop for Márquez's amorous allegory; indeed, though it's not named in the book, Cartagena is clearly the town he had in mind. The Plaza de los Coches became the 'arcade of scribes', where the protagonist pens love poetry; as you pass the houses and horse carriages of the colonnaded square you may feel similarly inspired. Cartagena, on Colombia's Caribbean coast, is hot year-round, though blessed by sea breezes; December to April is the dry season.

Rumble game start-up scores $15 million in funding

Rumble, a newly formed online gaming company with a roster of industry veterans, has shaken $15 million in funding from two of Silicon Valley's bigger money trees -- Google Ventures and Khosla Ventures. What Google and Khosla seem to be betting on is not Rumble's games; the company hasn't published any. Instead, they're putting their money on Rumble's business strategy and its high-wattage management team. First, the strategy: Rumble aims to become a publisher for the next generation of online games -- titles that are easy to jump into, have high-quality graphics and are free to play, but supported by sales of virtual goods or enhanced game features. Although the Redwood City, Calif., company will develop some of its own titles, its primary goal is to help independent publishers bring their games to market. Ugg Boots SaleThat's been a good recipe for Chillingo and Ngmoco, two companies that publish mobile games and were sold a year ago for generous sums. Ngmoco, known for the games Godfinger and We Rule, went to Japanese social networking company DeNA for $400 million in October 2010. That same month, Chillingo, which publishes Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, was snapped up by Electronic Arts Inc. for just under $20 million. Second, the management team: Greg Richardson, Rumble's chief executive, was head of BioWare/Pandemic, a game development studio that was sold to EA for $860 million in 2007. John Yoo, Rumble's design director, worked on a long list of online games, including CityVille, World of Warcraft, City of Heroes and Star Trek Online. Rumble's general manager of games, Mark Spenner, hails from EA, where he was vice president of social games. And Rumble co-founder David O'Connor was EA's chief technology officer. The proof in Rumble's pudding will presumably reveal itself next year, when it plans to release its first title, an online game targeted at men 18 to 35. Richardson declined to reveal further details of the game. "In the entertainment industry, quality is the only business plan that matters in the long run," Richardson said. "That embodies who we are."

This won't just affect Liverpool

Meanwhile, the courageous and unforgotten Mordechai Vanunu has just been locked up by Israeli Rosetta Stone authorities for another three months. Give us a break and stop trying to excuse every illegal Israeli action by referring to Iran. Kambiz Afrachteh Potts Point I've been racking my brain to think of something Israel has offered us in friendship (Letters, May ). Could someone enlighten me? Liverpool Council is to be commended on its stand against this proposal. This does not move 1 million trucks off Sydney's roads, as the federal government claims, but simply moves them to Liverpool. The Treasurer revealed this on budget night by saying it would relieve the pressure on Port Botany. This won't just affect Liverpool. Any suburbs that have the freight lines and the M5 servicing the terminal will cop the noise, pollution and traffic from freight trains and an increase in truck numbers. His public appearances make it clear he still has all his marbles. Some of his achievements in domestic and foreign Rosetta Stone Software affairs were remarkable. Paul Lynch Elizabeth Bay By espousing commonsense ideals of individual freedom, equality of opportunity, tolerance and more astute foreign policy, Malcolm Fraser hardly resides within ''the bosom of the progressive left''. The economy and the election

Avoiding a recession will now constrain the Government in an election year, write Phillip Rosetta Stone Coorey and Jessica Irvine. The prospect of a steady drip feed of interest rate increases, a deficit-laden budget unable to afford costly promises, and a key policy strength severely diminished is hardly the ideal way to begin an election year. Yet that is what the Rudd Government faces as Parliament resumes next week and the Prime Minister embarks on a quest to secure a second term in power. Advertisement: Story continues below Australian voters are traditionally tolerant of first-term governments and on only three occasions have they denied a new administration a second term - in 1913, 1914 and 1931. Insiders in the Labor and Liberal parties, speaking candidly and off the record, say they believe Labor will win what will probably be a spring election. ''I would take a miracle,'' said a senior Liberal of Tony Abbott's chance of becoming prime minister this year. He said the key aim was to position the Coalition to win the election after next. ''The critical objective will be not to go backwards. Everyone was assuming we'd go backwards at the next election because we didn't lose by that much last time, so the core strategic objective will be to hold the line and, if possible, claw some ground back.'' Again, history favours the latter objective. A blogger and data cruncher, Andrew Catsaras, noted this week that of the six new governments elected since the war, all were re-elected for a second term with a reduced margin. While opinion polls suggest Labor will increase its majority at the election, history suggests the polls will tighten between now and then and that Rudd will be returned with a reduced majority. Up against the wily and fearless Abbott, Rudd returned to work early this year in an attempt to frame the debate away from the issue that dominated the end of last year, climate change. The Prime Minister gave a series of eight speeches focusing on the long-term Rosetta Stone American English economic challenges facing an increasingly ageing nation. Climate change was barely mentioned as Rudd set the scene for big changes to taxation and health administration to increase productivity and meet the challenges head on. On Tuesday the Government will reintroduce the legislation for its emissions trading scheme. It has next to no chance of passing in the Senate, and the move will be little more than a gesture. Abbott's ousting of Malcolm Turnbull and the fiasco at Copenhagen last month - where the reluctance of big polluting nations to take any action whatsoever was so publicly demonstrated - has lessened the support and impetus for a domestic emissions trading scheme that Rudd once had. ''We'll continue to talk about climate change and the need for action, but we won't get bogged down in the micro debate,'' a minister said. ''People still want action on climate change, and there remains a danger for Abbott because people don't take him seriously.'' Health, education, tax and the economy will be the Government's focus this year. The key charge against Rudd by Abbott is that he promised everything and has done nothing. Rudd was explicit in his language before the last election that he could not lower petrol, housing or food prices. But there is little room for nuance in politics and plenty for perception. The fact that Rudd empathised with people about the cost of living suggested to them he would do something. ''He scratched everybody's itch and said 'I've got a fix for you' but just hasn't delivered,'' said a senior Liberal. ''There's clearly coming through a train of frustration that he's all talk and no action.'' Rudd bristles at the charge. His promise to seek a public mandate to take Rosetta Stone Chinese financial control of public hospitals at the next election is a few months behind in the development but still on track.

Subdued Virtual World for Japan

Orderly, pornography-free and safe for children, "meet-me," an online interactive virtual Tokyo, is Rosetta Stone outlet Japan's answer to "Second Life." Or so its creators hope. Kunimasa Hamaoka, who oversees "meet-me" at digital marketing company Transcosmos Inc., is banking on the cultural differences between Japanese and Americans to compete against the world's top virtual community. Japanese are so well-behaved and conformist, he says, they would prefer a more predictable and secure virtual environment over the free-spirited anything-goes of "Second Life," created by San Francisco-based Linden Lab. Advertisement: Story continues below In "meet-me," players' avatars, or computer-generated alter-egos, are rounder and softer, more like the cuddly characters of "Pokemon" than the angular and relatively realistic avatars of "Second Life." The sun rises and sets in "meet-me" on Tokyo time. And avatars must ride trains or other vehicles or walk or run to get around a city whose streets and buildings look much like real Tokyo's; they can't jump from place to place as they can in "Second Life." American Internet successes stories have leapt over to Japan with varying results. YouTube, for example, has done fine. But other imports haven't caught on, opening opportunities for Japanese variations to make it big. Japan's social networking service Mixi has attracted 11.1 million people, while the Japanese adaptation of MySpace has enjoyed only moderate success, with fewer than 1.4 million visitors, for example. But Sony Corp. of Japan, which has a major video game unit, last week delayed until next year the release of "Home," its entrant in the "metaverse," or virtual world. Sony President Kazuo Hirai said the PlayStation 3 Rosetta Stone Arabic application needed more work. He didn't offer a reason for the delay, but PS3 sales are faltering at 5 million worldwide since it went on sale late last year in Japan and the U.S., and in March in Europe and that limits the outlook for "Home" from the get-go. Hamaoka said he is determined to make "meet-me" a strictly Japanese hit, although foreign tourists are welcome visitors. "This will be a place where people can enjoy themselves with a sense of safety like Disneyland," he said. "There's total freedom to act in 'Second Life,' which requires individual responsibility. It's very American. Almost everything is OK, including evil." In a demonstration, a female "meet-me" avatar in a sedate suit wandered on foot around the Shibuya shopping district, complete with landmarks, including stores and a sculpture of a head, a popular rendezvous spot. The usually jam-packed streets were still desolate because "meet-me" isn't open until December. Once it opens, it will offer cyberspace shopping, entertainment, games and Christmas lights. Visitors will be able to buy virtual plots of land, housing and furnishings much as in "Second Life." People also will be able to pick their avatars' appearance, hairstyle and gender. Hoping for a million users in its first year, Hamaoka is in talks with dozens of companies, including Shibuya retailers, to set up shop in "meet-me." But that's where the similarities to "Second Life" end. The operation and design of "meet-me" will be strictly controlled by Transcosmos, ensuring law and order and far more policing and filtering to ban profanity than in "Second Life," which only recently outlawed gambling and is grappling with violations. "Japanese aren't going to take to the culture of 'Second Life,'" Hamaoka said. "It's the kind of place where you can get shot in the back as soon as you log on." In fact, avatars can't die in "Second Life." But they can use guns. In contrast, Japan has extremely strict gun-control laws, with only the police and the underworld carrying firearms, and guns Rosetta Stone French are rarely seen in public.

Johnson's rise shows nothing succeeds like success

In the modern sporting pantheon teams the world over cart around psychologists, mental Rosetta Stone skills'' shrinks and mind-benders. Sometimes we question the value of paying these specialists vast amounts just to get the performers thinking straight. The argument goes along the lines of the mind guides the body'' and ''physical errors start life as confused thoughts. Any golfer who has had the putting yips will attest to this most paralysed message from brain to extremities. To sort out thoughts, you need the thought police or a psychiatrist. The Australian team talk continually of self-belief, ''clearing the mind'' and ''being yourself''. Zen meditation has been recommended by many. Does it work? Maybe, sometimes, probably. But nothing succeeds better then success, which brings us back to Mitchell ''Lazarus'' Johnson. Advertisement: Story continues below After a poor months , a diabolical first Test and a ''rotated'' second Test (Greg Chappell, you must be kidding) Lazarus has sprung back into prime form. But which came first, the chicken or the egg - the batting or the bowling? Mitchell has been nominated as a confidence player. When they believe that they can do the business, they mostly do. When they doubt their own capacity, they often don't. In Lazarus's case, bowl accurately, and bowl with movement, and the confidence player performs as they believe. Performance anxiety and fear Rosetta Stone Language of failure are two of the biggest killers in any sport. Steve Waugh would say back yourself''; Allan Border wouldn't say anything, he just showed you what self-belief looked like. Despite what his captain may have told the world during the Brisbane Test, Lazarus's body language was damning. Confidence was near zero. He looked unsure of what he was doing or how he might go about fixing the problem. He lacked self-belief and performed badly, thereby growing no confidence. In this match, he had the significant bonus of Ponting losing the toss and being sent in to bat. There are two reasons that provided a benefit. First, most bowlers feel extra pressure when the captain sends the opposition in. The insertion implies that conditions are much better to bowl and expectations on the new ball are higher than normal. He avoided the pressure layered on the pressure. Second, he had a chance to bat. His form with the bat had been mirroring that with the ball but this time he made a healthy contribution in a modest total in challenging conditions. He is a clean hitter and top-scored with some pure striking. He got to bowl only two overs at the end of the first day, giving him a fraction of a spell in which he can never fail, only succeed. He swung the ball in those two overs. By the time he got the ball on day two he had settled into the game, his confidence soothed by his score and warm-up overs. Going back 28 years to the Perth Test I, too, had the chance to settle into the game via some batting (yes, I know, a rarity) with a half-century and then followed up with a five-for. With Dennis Lillee, Terry Alderman, Rod Hogg and myself vying for spots I was under pressure to perform after Lillee had opted out of the spring tour to Pakistan. Things worked out a little differently with Lillee doing a serious knee injury and Terry tackling a spectator at deep cover (effectively putting him out of the game for almost two years) but the batting allowed me a measure of security with teammates and selectors even before we Rosetta Stone American English started to bowl. So far Mitchell has carried his first-innings technique and mindset into the second. Hopefully his second-innings batting isn't a form guide to his next bowling spell.

The Egyptian army declares

The first signs that the Egyptian crisis really would end this way emerged shortly after midday Rosetta Stone with news that he and his family had gone to his residence in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. In Cairo and other cities around the country, celebrations are taking place. Leaders from around the Middle East and the rest of the world have broadly welcomed Mubarak's departure - some in the west more cautiously than others. Read down to see how the day unfolded, as our coverage continues. The Egyptian army declares in a statement read out on television that it will not oppose the "popular will". 1830 UN chief Ban Ki-moon has joined in, telling reporters the "voice of the Egyptian people has been heard" and calling for "a transparent, orderly and peaceful transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Egyptian people." This had to include "free, fair and credible elections leading to the early establishment of civilian rule." he said. 1826 More from leading opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei: "Egypt Today is a free and proud nation. God bless," the former head of UN nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency wrote Rosetta Stone Software on Internet microblogging site Twitter. Will Hosni Mubarak be facing financial hardship in retirement? It seems unlikely. But one possible minor inconvenience following his departure from office: the Swiss government has just ordered a freeze on any assets belonging to him and his entourage, the Swiss foreign ministry said. Ah well. In London, David Cameron, prime minister of the former colonial power, Britain, found a new adjective, to say it had been a "remarkable", before urging whatever government is formed to "put in place the building blocks of a truly open, free and democratic society." "As a friend of Egypt and the Egyptian people we stand ready to help in any way that we can," he added. 1745 Voicing a key concern of western governments, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel urged the new leadership that will emerge to respect the country's peace treaty with Israel. Saying "I rejoice with the people in Egypt," and urging all to work together in peace, she added: "We also expect the future Egyptian government to continue to keep the peace in the Learn American English Middle East, in that the agreements made with Israel are respected and Israel's security is guaranteed," she said.

The stigma of 'sexual assistance'

Tenderness ... sexual assistants help the disabled lead a normal life. Photo: Cathryn Rosetta Stone Software Tremain Helping those who can't help themselves - sexually - comes at a price. For several years now, Jacques Arnould has been giving people with a disability in Switzerland the right to a little tenderness and sexual attention. But for many, his work as a professional "sexual assistant" treads a thin line between a caring profession and prostitution. Aged 50 and married with three children, Jacques is one of the rare Swiss assistants to openly speak out about the services he provides. Even in Switzerland, where the job of sexual assistant has had a proper legal status for more than eight years, the subject remains taboo. Advertisement: Story continues below A qualified physiotherapist, with a speciality in urinary and gynaecological issues, Jacques says there is "still a lot of educating to do on this subject" of sexual assistance for the handicapped, which is often misunderstood. "Disabled people are still people: they have fantasies, expectations, desires and frustrations," he said. The job of the sexual assistant is to respond to these needs and give people who might otherwise have little Rosetta Stone Language chance of being sexually active due to their handicap the opportunity to feel like a normal human being. Some sexual assistants show a disabled client how to touch and be touched, others bring the person to orgasm. There is usually a lengthy assessment of what a person's needs are and what he can actually physically achieve with his disability before anything physical takes place. Across town, far away from Zurich's red light districts, Michelle Gut, an elegant masseuse with long blonde hair, greets clients - many of whom are mentally or physically disabled - at her chic and comfortable Andana massage parlour. A masseuse since the 1990s, Michelle went on to qualify for legal status as a sexual assistant to give disabled clients "the sexual tenderness they are missing". "It is not easy to have a normal private life when you are handicapped," she said. "Some people just use pornography, others don't know anything about sexuality at all as they have no experience of it." Only around a dozen people in Rosetta Stone Chinese (Mandarin) Switzerland are trained to give this experience.

All good news to drive efficiencies into a manufacturing process

A fascinating article has just been published in Business Week on the tension Rosetta Stone between the relentless drive for efficiency at 3M and the price paid in innovation. 3M fell from number 1 in 2004, to number 7 this year on Boston Consulting's Most Innovative Companies list. The article references back to Fry, the famous inventor of the Post-it who places the blame for this loss on the application of Six Sigma to 3M's research labs. One telling quote illustrates the point: Steven Boyd, a PhD who had worked as a researcher at 3M for 32 years before his job was eliminated in 2004, was one of them. After a couple of months on a research project, he would have to fill in a "red book" with scores of pages worth of charts and tables, analyzing everything from the potential commercial application, to the size of the market, to possible manufacturing concerns. DMAIC, the Sig Sigma equivalent of the Ten Commandments, says it all. Define, measure, analyze, improve, control, but really bad news for innovation or general aspects of service involving customer interaction. DMAIC assumes that a system can be broken down into its component parts, each part optimised and then reassembled to create a more efficient whole. You can see from the article how 3M used this to drive operating margins up, all good news. The trouble is that reductionist methods (of which Six Stigma is the exemplar) assume order, repeatable and stable relationships between cause and effect. For complex systems it is contra indicated. I was in the Twin Cities a few weeks ago and someone in 3M said, with great wisdom I thought: We have put Six Sigma back in its Rosetta Stone Software box. One of the interesting things about Six Sigma is not the BPR on speed aspect of its obsessions, but the addition of a quasi religious cult with the whole Black-Belt phenomena. The creation of an elite group of disciples, exempt from the relentless regime of measurement that they impose on unsuspecting natives, smacks of the worst aspects of evangelical invasion of aboriginal communities (including interestingly the elimination of existing language). Having no real context, these modern day Inquisitors cannot see the richness of the evolutionary present, and seek to eliminate it to produce the uniformity of their simplistic future heavenly reunion with the Gods of order, efficiency and clinical tidiness. The growing cult of leadership, the use of the tools and techniques of cult initiate and control. the evangelical advocacy of a new method or tool as a universal panacea is on of the most disturbing aspects of modern management and one of the most dangerous.Striped of its religious trappings, confined to equilibrium state systems such as manufacturing, shopping etc, Six Sigma is a useful tool (although no different from half a dozen cheaper and more efficient BPR tools and methods). The following two quotes from the articles summarise the key issues.Defenders of Six Sigma at 3M claim that a more systematic new-product introduction process allows innovations to get to market faster. But Fry, the Post-it note inventor, disagrees. In fact, he places the blame for 3M's recent lack of innovative sizzle squarely on Six Sigma's application in 3M's research labs. Innovation, he says, is "a numbers game. You have to go through 5,000 to 6,000 raw ideas to find one successful business." Six Sigma would ask, why not eliminate all that waste and just come up with the right idea the first time? That way of thinking, says Fry, can have serious side effects. "What's remarkable is how fast a culture can be torn apart," says Fry, who lives in Maplewood, Minn., just a few minutes south of the corporate campus and Rosetta Stone English pops into the office regularly to help with colleagues' projects.
